What are Some Ways I Can Stay Active Outdoors as the Weather Begins to Change?

Monika Cotter: There are so many ways to enjoy and stay active outdoors as fall begins to approach. My family and I love to take the dog for a walk while we check out the trees changing color; or, we go for bike rides in the metroparks to have a healthy picnic. Fall is my favorite season to take a scenic jog. Not too hot and not too cold. Just perfect, and there is always something pretty to look at!

Steven Madden: Just because the season will be changing soon doesn't mean we will have to pack up and move all our activity inside for the foreseeable future.  No self respecting jogger would put off their morning run just because it's a little cool outside.  They simply layer up and get moving.  Plus, this is the time to start walking or riding.  With the leaves changing soon, you'll have a great view when you go for a walk or a ride outside.  Besides, this is also football season, you can always play a game of two hand touch with some friends.  Plus, there is still gardening to do, this is the time to plant bulbs for next year.  Kayakers don't give up in this kind of season either.  Just because it's getting darker sooner and it may be getting colder does not mean your outdoor activities have to stop.

Lisa Clark: As the weather begins to change and temperatures are starting to drop, some people may find they need to change their normal outdoor activities to something more weather appropriate. Fall is a wonderful time for nature hikes, cycling and running. However raking leaves can be quite a workout if you put away the backpack blower and get out a good old-fashioned rake! Did you know you can burn approximately 300 cal per hour by raking leaves?

After the leaves have all been raked up and the snow begins to fall consider getting outside with friends for a snowball fight! You can burn over 300 cal per hour on average by having a snowball fight or build a snowman and burn on average 285 cal per hour! Skiing is always a popular winter sport, however if you are unable to ski or just plain afraid, have you considered snowshoeing? Snowshoeing is an effective, low impact and safe form of exercise that burns up to twice the number of calories as walking at the same speed (approx 600 cal/hr)

Whatever your goals and abilities are there are always fun outdoor activities for all seasons. So get outside, get active and HAVE FUN!!

Kelly Bailey: We all know it's coming: fewer daylight hours, cold temperatures, and weather that changes on a dime. This often leads to post-summer blues, and perhaps a pity party on the couch with a bag of chips. Make this the season you change your attitude about what's to come. Autumn in Ohio is one of the best times of year to get outside and enjoy nature while you exercise. It's not too hot, the bugs are gone, and mother nature puts on a spectacular color show. Whether you like to run, bike, hike, or kayak, this is a great time of year to enjoy these activities. The most important thing to remember about participating in any outdoor activity at this time of the year is to be well-prepared for changing weather conditions. Watch the weather before heading out, dress in layers, and use common sense. Above all, have fun and enjoy Ohio's best season!

Adam Teplitz: There are plenty of ways to stay active outdoors with the cooler temperatures rolling in. One option is raking leaves or doing other yard work. Another option is kayaking or canoeing. Paddling kayaks or canoes is a great form of exercise. The benefits include aerobics, cardio and increased upper body strength. A nature hike is another way to stay active and  take in the cool air.
Yet another option is outdoor yoga. It's usually associated with the summer months, but there's no reason why it should be restricted to warm temperatures. Fall is also a great time to bike outdoors. Improve your cardiovascular health and build the lower body muscles by going for a bike ride.
One final option would be signing up for a fall time 5k, such as the Brecksville Kiwanis Trick-or-Trot sponsored by Fitness Together. It's definitely more comfortable to run in cooler weather. Don't let the cooler temperatures discourage you from staying active outdoors. Take advantage of them, take in the scenery and be creative.

Bronson Rotaru: A lot of times people think they can't get active outside in the fall and winter. The truth is the temperatures are typically pretty decent throughout November and even early December. As long as you as dressed appropriately you can still walk or jog outside. You would be surprised how fast you warm up! The cold weather season is a fantastic time to try something new like skiing. Take advantage of nearby Brandywine.
