Hello Friends, Family, Clients & Fellow Fitness Enthusiasts!
This morning I read a great article by best-selling author Kasey Edwards titled How the Fitness Industry Turns People Off Exercise which is something that I have been thinking of myself lately. I often have to step back and take a look at our industry as a fitness professional. There are currently more gyms, personal trainers and fitness class options available than there ever have been, so why is it that the obesity rate continues to increase; and, people's health continues to decline? In her article, Kasey points to a recent study that suggests people are intimidated to go to the gym because of the way fitness is perceived by those who watch some popular reality tv shows or see dramatic transformation propaganda of "perfectly figured fitness models" plastered all over their social media sites. It claims that those same people are uncomfortable to exercise in front of other people because of their own body image, or afraid of being bullied to the point of complete exhaustion, throwing up, or even worse---injury! The old saying of no pain, no gain couldn't be further from the truth, and we need to do a better job of delivering that message.
You may never be a supermodel, and that's okay!
I was just chatting with a long-time client and friend yesterday about goals and body image. She expressed that most people have the ideal when they're in their teens and twenties to look like the perfectly sculpted model. She went on to say how for her, it gets to the point where you realize you may never be a supermodel, and that's okay! The important factors become how do you feel and how well do you function during your daily tasks. This particular client came to us with chronic pain and several movement restrictions. It is important as personal trainers that we are properly equipped with the knowledge of anatomy and physiology to help someone such as this. At Fitness Together, we have a phenomenal team of nationally accredited personal trainers. We were able to work with this client and focus on what she can do instead of what she couldn't do in order to build up some foundational strength and confidence. Fastforward a bit, and now she feels pain free, and her doctors are amazed at her progress. We didn't accomplish this by belittling her and making her feel inadequate or guilty for her injuries throughout the process the way that television tells us some personal trainers would; instead, we provided a safe and educational environment where we nurtured her and gave her all of the credit for every single small victory accomplished along the way.
Changing the way that the world does fitness
I had the pleasure of meeting a true trendsetter in our industry last month named Alwyn Cosgrove. He gave an inspiring talk focused on the mission that he has for our industry to change the way fitness is done, period-- and that starts with us as personal trainers. We are the experts, and we are the ones who people turn to when they're confused on how to take care of their health and fitness. So, what is the answer we're giving them? There should never be any reason for a client or potential client to be afraid to walk into our doors at Fitness Together. We provide a fun and safe place for you to exercise where we treat our clients like family. We will absolutely ease you into your exercise program without doing too much too soon. And you can do all of this in a private setting, where no one else is in the room besides your trainer. I am proud of the core values that we have at our studio, and you will see them hanging on our wall as soon as you walk in: Fun, Ownership, Respect, Passion and Integrity. This drives the culture that we have built and the experience you should expect. First and foremost, we want to have fun when you're here. We will collaborate with you to find the things that you enjoy about exercise, and ensure that you have a positive vibe when you're here. If your training session isn't the best part of your day, then we were doing something wrong. We allow you to take ownership of the progress that you make. We may be some of the best personal trainers in the world, but you are the one doing the work and putting trust in our program. You will find a high level of respect at our studio. No one will bully you or intimidate you into action. There is no denying the passion that our team has for health and for helping you to achieve your goals. They truly love what they do. That passion can be contagious and just might rub off on you! The integrity speaks for itself---we are who we say we are. No gimmicks, no excuses...just private personal training with results.
So, is the fitness industry dissuading people from exercising? Maybe it is. But not here at Fitness Together in Brecksville, Ohio. Here, we are making a difference by changing the way the world does fitness. One Client. One Trainer. One Goal at a time....
To Your Health,
Sean
