What are some health benefits of having a dog for a pet?

Adam Teplitz: When it comes to pet ownership, there are a number of proven health benefits. These include physical and emotional improvements. They vary from enhancing social skills to decreasing a person’s risk of a heart attack. One proven health benefit is that the presence of a pet can actually improve the overall health of your heart. Results of studies have found that pet owners exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides levels. These benefits are thought to be connected to a pet’s tendency to help reduce or at least lower their owner's overall stress levels.
Pets are also a great motivation when it comes to exercise. Dogs can act as the perfect personal trainer. Studies have shown that dog owners responsible for walking their pups are less likely to be obese than dog owners who pass the duty off to someone else or those who don't own dogs at all..

Steven Madden: There are a lot of health benefits to owning a dog.  Besides the obvious exercise that you would revive from walking a dog, petting a dog has been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Some studies have even shown that dog owners have a higher rate of heart attack survival due to lower blood pressure and heart rate.  Dogs also tend to lower the stress levels of their owners.  If you have children, owning a dog can make them less likely to develop allergies.  Dogs can even help people suffering from depression feel better.

Jessica Regula: Dogs are wonderful creatures in so many different ways. Besides them being "man's best friend," they can also help bring about health benefits.  Dogs are wonderful therapy for depression, anxiety, and stress. By stroking their soft fur, curling up with them, or playing fetch, they help to lower blood pressure by relieving stress. Furthermore, dogs will keep you active! They are always reminding you to stretch, looking for a game of fetch, or looking for a walking/running buddy! Get fit and healthy with your best friend!!

Justin Traft: I would have to say owning a dog is pretty awesome. Dogs are so much more than just an animal. One of the big benefits is the companionship. They love you for who you are. If you’re stressed out because of work they are there for you wagging their tails ready to make you feel in a good mood again. Second you always have a workout partner if you’re not feeling motivated. They are always down to go for a run or walk no matter the time of day. My dog personally has much energy she has me up and moving non-stop . I think owning a dog you are more willing to go do things that you may have not done by yourself like taking a trail walk or running through the park or maybe going swimming in the pool or at the beach during the summer.

Monika Cotter: If you’re not a dog owner, you may be missing out. While they may be time-consuming and expensive, there are many health benefits to owning a dog. Some of the benefits are having a lower heart rate, that dogs can help with anxiety issues and owning a dog makes you get out and exercise more. Also there have been many studies that show children who grow up with dogs develop less allergies; and, it can help elderly people who have alzheimers to have less episodes of anxiety and confusion. Plus, dogs will always give you unconditional love, what could be better than that? So reach out and love on a dog today!
