This past summer, Diana R. of Brecksville took the same
no-holds-barred approach to a knee replacement that she always has in
her everyday life.
The super active 60-something corporation president knew she needed to be back in action as quickly and as safely as possible. So she decided to stack the deck in her favor and train for her surgery at Fitness Together in Brecksville.
That’s right, she trained for surgery.
“When the pain had worsened from degenerative osteoarthritis and the bone-on-bone condition in both knees was limiting my activities, I turned to the experts at Fitness Together before surgery,” she says.
Says trainer Taynee Pearson, who, in addition to owner Sean Sullivan, worked with Diana, “We created a well-rounded program that built on what the Cleveland Clinic therapists recommended, and took it a step further with moves geared toward strengthening her upper body and core, and improving balance. The Bosu ball was brought into almost every workout, as it relies on a larger number of muscles to stabilize the body.”
Diana said she was surprised by how much her upper body came into play following surgery, hoisting herself in and out of bed and maneuvering once she was in a walker.
The program worked fantastically well. Within two weeks of her surgery, Diana was moving about using a walker. She went to a cane in the third week, which is weeks ahead of most knee replacement patients.
“Sean is highly motivational,” says Diana. “When he found out one of my goals was to improve my leg strength enough to go snorkeling and sailing in Maui, the next time I came in there was a picture of a sailboat hanging on the wall.”
She is already gearing up to replace her other knee next March. And the trainers at Fitness Together will be there right beside her along the way.
“One of the reasons I picked Fitness Together was because of the private training suites,” she says. “I don’t think I would stick with a program if it was at a noisy, crowded gym where you stand around waiting for machines.”
Another Fitness Together client who has dealt with knee replacement this year, Dick P., of Sagamore Hills, had already undergone one replacement a few years ago and experienced a difficult time with rehabilitation.
“With the second surgery, I wanted to be in the kind of shape I needed to be for a better outcome,” says Dick. “And with the program designed for me by the trainers at FT, I was. My recovery was so much more successful with the second procedure. I say that insurance companies should think about paying fitness studios in addition to therapists.”
Sean says that Dick and Diana’s success is not that different from most of FT’s clients, who faithfully stay with their prescribed programs.
“In addition to preparing for a surgery and rehabbing injuries, once clients start training with us they realize how strong muscles lead to strong bones,” he says. “And increased strength prevents injuries, alleviates pain from arthritis, and greatly improves mobility.”
In addition to Sean, the other nationally certified trainers at the studio are Lisa Clark, Taynee Pearson, Monika Cotter, Steven Madden, Bronson Rotaru, and Adam Teplitz. Each of the private training suites is outfitted with the latest equipment, from cardio machines to TRX suspension bands, medicine and stability balls, and weights geared to both individual and small group “pack” sessions.
“We offer an elite level of training, but with down-to-earth customer service,” says Sean. “No matter who you train with, everybody knows your name here. And clients are greeted at the door each visit with a towel and water bottle.”
